It's easy to dream big when it comes to home remodels or new builds.
And building a home right is worth every dollar.
So here are some tips:
1. Hire a licensed contractor, with references and solid reviews.
Make sure you are doing business with a reputable, legal company. This will insure that your transaction is legally binding and will be completed by a professional. Although it can be tempting to cut corners and hire your local handy man, this often leads to much larger problems and higher overall project completion costs. Not to mention when you pay someone under the table there is no easy legal recourse to take when your home decides to fall over, or your shower wall springs a leak.
2. Have accurate and detailed plans created.
Taking the time to get a professionally drawn set of plans or 3D design can drastically increase your chances of success. yes I know what you are thinking "duh." but you would be surprised how often this critical detail is overlooked. Next thing you know, you find yourself with a finished product different than the one you had intended to purchase.
3. Sign a contract, your consumer protection notices and know your rights.
Please, for everybody's sake insist on a contract. For any project over $2000 dollars the Oregon Construction Contractors Board requires a contract to be signed, However I suggest always getting it in writing. This way everyone is on the same page.
